Streets around Rockefeller Center will be closed to cars from Nov. 29 through the New Year to make more space for the crush of pedestrians during the holiday season, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday.
The mayor said that 49th and 50th Streets between Fifth and Sixth Avenues will be closed “for much of the day” — specifically from 2:00 pm to midnight Monday through Thursday, 1:00 pm to midnight on Friday, and 10:00 am to midnight on Saturday and Sunday.
A lane of traffic along both the east and west sides of Fifth Avenue between 48th and 52nd Streets will be reserved for pedestrians between at least 5:00 pm to midnight during the week, and by noon on the weekends. During these periods, no turns will be allowed on 47th, 49th or 51st Streets.
Additionally, the east side of Sixth Avenue will be blocked off between 48th and 52nd Streets at certain times. These closures will likely bring gridlock and delay vehicle deliveries.
